Just because you’ve spent an hour shredding important documents doesn’t mean that those shredded pieces of paper can’t be put back together again. Unshredder, dubbed the first commercial document reconstruction tool in the world, is a computer program capable of reconstructing documents that have been strip-shred and cross-shred, and documents with torn pages. Instead of aligning each little shredded piece by hand, this Windows-based application automates the reassembly of documents through four simple steps: collate, segmentation, reconstruction, and report. The finished results can then be printed, e-mailed, or copied. Used by government agencies, police departments, lawyers, private investigators, and security agents, Unshredder is available with a monthly license for $90 or a yearly license starting at $950.

The Apple Watch Series 3 is waterproof, has GPS capabilities, and looks good on the wrist. The real question is whether another company is going to be able to take the top spot off Apple, or if this space is going to stay the same until the Apple Watch 4 comes out.
Notion is a home intelligence system that was recently funded on Kickstarter that uses a small, smart, multi-function sensor to detect quite a significant number of things in your home: a water leak, when a door/cabinet opens and closes, temperature and sound. When any of these things are detected, Notion will send a message to your smartphone (works with both iOS and Android). For example, if you place a Notion on your front door, it can tell you if someone knocks, if the door is opened, or if it doesn’t get shut. Its potential uses are incredible. If you put it on, say a liquor cabinet, it can tell you when that cabinet is opened. It also has a temperature sensor and can tel you if your house is getting too hot or too cold when you’re away from home. It isn’t yet available, but it is expected to ship in July.

So, these were just some of the highlights from this year’s NAMM. Yes, we also saw amazing new gear from the likes of Pioneer DJ, Roland, Alesis, Native Instruments, and more, but these two little corners of the show wound up being incredibly intriguing. Companies are not just thinking about how to make music and music-making easy to approach, but how to provide solutions for consumers that enhance the gear they already own and cherish. Most of the aforementioned products fell in the price range of a couple hundred dollars — the The ONE Piano Hi-Lite is $229 and the Phase should retail for around $300 — and these slight investments can have much bigger payoffs for musicians.
